​​Forward is a great time to learn from your fellow delegates, and from visiting experts in elections, campaigns and progressive movements. Here are the speakers and panelists you’ll hear from in plenary sessions this weekend at Forward.

Premier Wab Kinew

Premier Wab Kinew is the 25th premier of Manitoba. Kinew was first elected as the MLA for Fort Rouge in 2016 and was elected party leader and leader of the official opposition in 2017.

He is the son of Dr. Tobasonakwut Kinew and Dr. Kathi Kinew and is from the Onigaming First Nation in northwestern Ontario.

Before becoming an MLA, Kinew worked as a broadcaster and as an administrator at the University of Winnipeg.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Manitoba and a master’s degree in Indigenous governance. Kinew is an honorary witness of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a bestselling author.

He is a caring dad to three boys and a devoted husband to his wife Lisa, who is a doctor.

Premier David Eby

Premier David Eby is a determined problem-solver, willing to stand up to powerful interests to get results for people.

David served as British Columbia’s Attorney General, where he eliminated big money from BC elections, and targeted money laundering in casinos and real estate. He secured a groundbreaking settlement against opioid manufacturers, enhancing corporate accountability for the overdose crisis, and reformed ICBC; slashing car insurance rates by $400 annually.

As Housing Minister, David spearheaded the construction of thousands of middle-class homes. Now Premier, he focuses on transforming BC housing into homes for residents; not profit sources for investors.

Before his tenure as MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey, David was a distinguished lawyer and scholar, advocating for low-income residents and their homes against developers in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

He and his wife Cailey, a family doctor, welcomed their son Ezra in 2014, their daughter Iva in 2019 and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new addition in June 2024.

Jodie Wickens

With a career spanning more than two decades, Jodie Wickens is a community leader, social justice activist, and former BC NDP MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.

Currently the Director of Programs and Services for Child and Youth programs at a large non-profit in the Tri-Cities, she’s focused on helping children and families — particularly those with neurodiverse members — build good lives and get good outcomes. She’s a gold cord recipient from Douglas College and recipient of the Vickie Carmack leadership award.

Sunita Dhir

For the last 32 years, Sunita Dhir has been an integral part of the south Vancouver and Marpole communities.

With nearly two decades of service at SUCCESS, a non-profit organization that supports newcomers on their settlement journey, Sunita has helped hundreds of people learn english and connect to their new communities here in BC. She strongly supports workers’ rights in British Columbia and champions fair and equitable treatment for all. Sunita is our BC NDP candidate in Vancouver-Langara.

Jen Ford

Jen Ford knows the difference good governance can make for BC communities and the people who live in them.

A municipal councillor for the Resort Municipality of Whistler since 2014, she’s also the board chair of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District and the Past-President of the Union of BC Municipalities. Jen is passionate about affordable housing, community building, primary care for an aging population, and accessible childcare. Jen Ford is our BC NDP candidate in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.

Marie Della Mattia

In Marie’s first political campaign she was dropping leaflets and silkscreening black and orange lawn signs on a neighbours driveway. It was 1972.

Since then, she’s had key roles in over 60 municipal, provincial and federal elections, including electing seven NDP premiers in five provinces. She’d like to make it an even eight with David Eby.

She calls the Kootenays, Surrey, New Westminster, the South Island, and the Gulf Islands home and is always eager to figure out what history, geography, work or relations you might have in common.

She’s determined to win because she knows people in BC are counting on us to make sure they can build a good life here. Marie is the BC NDP campaign director for this fall’s election.

Aaron Sumexheltza

Aaron Sumexheltza (phonetically: Shoo-muh-hetsa) is the first Indigenous President of the BC New Democratic Party.

Aaron was born in Merritt, BC and is of Nlaka’pamux descent. A practicing lawyer for more than fifteen years, Aaron is also the former elected chief of the Lower Nicola Indian Band.

Aaron is a strong advocate for local communities, supporting small business and economic development, and protecting our lands and waters for present and future generations. He lives with his young family in Merritt.

Panel Speakers

Amna Shah

Amna Shah is an experienced campaigner who has worked to elect New Democrats in BC, Alberta, Ontario, and at the federal level. She currently serves as the EDA president for Surrey-Guildford and as a Surrey-Delta regional rep on the BC NDP provincial executive. Amna is the BC NDP caucus Director of Outreach, working to build and nurture relationships with diverse communities across our province.

Kassandra Cordero

Kassandra Cordero is a settler of mixed Mapuche, Chilean, and South Asian ancestry. She lives and works on unceded Kwantlen, Katzie and Semiahmoo territory in Surrey BC, and has a passion for Indigenous rights, human rights, anti-racism, and transformative process. She is the co-chair of the BC NDP IBPOC committee and a member of the Surrey Newton BC NDP executive. She is in her final year of a masters degree in Global Leadership at Royal Roads University and enjoys paddleboarding, writing, art and music in her downtime.

Anna Thomas

Anna, who is of Nlaka’pamux and Cree heritage, was the BC NDP candidate for Kamloops-South Thompson in 2020. Committed to improving the lives of Indigenous peoples, Anna and her husband Morgan Charles are equally passionate about building a better and more just world for their two sons. Anna works hard to get results for people in her community — and has been a key part of the leadership teams for local, provincial, and national Indigenous organizations. Following a 12-year career at RBC, Anna was the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy Coordinator for the BC Native Women’s Association. Her advocacy work dates back to her time at Simon Fraser University, where she served as student council president.

Jonquil Hallgate

For more than four decades, Jonquil has worked with unhoused, vulnerable people and those living in poverty. She manages a faith-based mission that connects people to housing — and helps them maintain it. A member of both the Surrey Centre provincial and federal NDP, Jonquil also participates as a member of the Persons Living with Disabilities and Women and Gender Rights Committees. She is the mother to two children, a daughter and son.

Annie Wu Henry

Annie Wu Henry is a progressive creative director and digital strategy expert with a deep belief in the power of on-the-ground organizing.

She has worked for AOC, Ro Khanna, the Working Families Party, PA Stands Up and more, where her visionary approach has propelled campaigns and initiatives to new heights. Notably, she served as the social media producer for John Fetterman’s successful Senate campaign in Pennsylvania.

She is passionate about progressive politics, press notifications, pop culture, pressed coffee and people who do the right thing.
